It was a really nice Monday for the new week. My mind was full; it was filled with the happiness I got after the English examination. In fact I got the highest mark in our class, and Mrs. Zecchetti said that my English composition was really good. I looked at my test paper. There was a large word on it: best.

As I thought before, although everything about English had changed, English itself would never change. That’s why I got the first place without learning anything in the new book. All my classmates were very surprised; they even regarded me as a super girl in English. But only I knew why I could do that.

This was a great beginning for me in my new school. Getting a good grade not only meant you can get more attention from the teachers and the classmates, but also represented how my life would be in the next few years for me. This small success made me happier and more confident in the coming few days.

Although I got the first place, I didn’t get full mark. I made two silly mistakes that had never been made in my old school. Generally speaking, I felt happy but I was not very satisfied with it. For this reason I also felt disappointed from time to time. I’d like all the things to be perfect, especially what I did in English.

An “advantage” that I got was the deference from my classmates. On Monday evening when I was reading some English books, some of the boys in my class came to me and stopped in front of me. “What a good job you did in the English exam! What else can you do so well?” One of the boys said. He seemed to be a great student, and I could clearly feel the jealousy in his words. I looked at the boys once again. The boys who were standing behind the “leader boy” all looked smart and envious. Suddenly they all began shouting at me, “How did you make this, how? We need to know all your ways of studying. We can’t let you surpass us!”

The boys were keeping shouting. I thought carefully for a while. They were aggressive, weren’t they? But they really were playing their little tricks on me. So I said loudly, “Don’t make me yell at you guys!” the boys stopped shouting.

I continued to speak, “You all needn’t do this, do you? You shouted loudly in the classroom, and were impolite to your new classmate. Don’t you feel even a little embarrassed? Don’t you realize you’re doing things the wrong way?”

“Oh Miss Questa, stop talking like that—you mustn’t talk like that. Tell us your way of learning,” One of the boys said. And another little boy walked out from the crowd, “Miss Questa, could you please tell me what the difference is between the two words ‘easy’ and ‘difficult’? I think you know the answer. If you tell me, I’ll be thankful to you forever.” He said with a crafty smile.

I was really driven up to the wall by them at the time. I replied with a very thin voice, “Oh sir, you mean ‘easy’ and ‘difficult’? That’s no difference. You can use them as one word,” I laughed, “Any more questions, you lot?”

Without a sound, the crowd melted away.

I got to know me score in the afternoon of Monday, but I didn’t see my test paper until Mrs. Zecchetti handed it out to me and checked the answers in class on Tuesday morning. She looked a little happy and excited that day, because of me. I could guess what she thought. She had got a good student without doing anything. However, she was an experienced teacher. She surely knew what to do. I sat on my chair and listened to Mrs. Zecchetti in class carefully. After the quarrel with those silly boys yesterday evening, I was angry and tired. I didn’t feel happy or glad anymore.

During the class, Mrs. Zecchetti praised me several times using exaggerated words. But I didn’t feel any better because I heard the boys kept laughing at me at the back.

Class was over. I walked to Mrs. Zecchetti, trying to apologize to her. I had made silly mistakes in the test. I wouldn’t do that again. But when I got close to her, I lost the confidence to apologize. Before I tried my best to calm myself down, and used my whole strength to start speaking, Mrs. Zecchetti started to speak suddenly.

“Yes, you—come with me.” She said and held my left hand. I got surprised, and very afraid.

Mrs. Zecchetti pulled me out of the classroom. Lots of boys rushed out of the classroom with her. “Mrs. Zecchetti, how’s my score in class?” A boy asked.

“Well…you? Your score is about eighty? That’s not very good, about the twentieth in your class.”

“Oh…Mrs. Zecchetti…How can I do better? I have to do better next time…Mrs. Zecchetti?”

“The test is over. Go and have fun.” Mrs. Zecchetti replied and smiled at him. The boy signed and went back. But some boys were still asking questions to Mrs. Zecchetti. She didn’t get angry. I waited quietly beside her. Suddenly Mrs. Zecchetti held me in her arms and said to the boys, “Now all go back. The thing is over. Focus on tomorrow.”

All the boys stopped talking. They looked at Mrs. Zecchetti—their head teacher—and me in her arms—in surprise. Mrs. Zecchetti held me tighter. “Now go…Nothing serious…Go…” She exerted herself to say these words. Her bosom was warm; but I felt that she shook a little when she yelled out these words. However, she’s getting old.

We walked slowly for some minutes in the corridor without saying anything. Mrs. Zecchetti was still holding me tightly. Little by little, I became calmer and didn’t feel afraid anymore. In fact, I really enjoy the smell coming out from her, which I mentioned last time. We walked together to the door of the teachers’ office and stopped. There Mrs. Zecchetti began to speak, with a loving voice:

“Well…your English is good. I think you needn’t think about this too much. Just listen to me in class and remember what we’re learning about. I hope you can get full mark next time—The mistakes you made were silly, weren’t they?” Mrs. Zecchetti smiled at me. I nodded and laughed.

“As for you, I think the most important thing is that you should learn maths and physics better. Your teachers are all here—” She pointed into the office, “You can ask them questions any time you like. In fact they’re not that difficult…I believe in you.” She patted my shoulder, “And that’s all I want to say. Please remember all of these. Now go to have classes with your teacher and friends.” Mrs. Zecchetti smiled.

I thanked her and ran back to the classroom as fast as I could. I felt more relaxing than ever. The boys were some meters away from me, looking at me up and down quietly. No one went on playing tricks on me.

But why was Mrs. Zecchetti being so nice to me? Because she was the head teacher, or because I was a new student, or because of my English score? These things were too real to us. I thought carefully for a while. Yeah, I got it.

  Because we both love English.
