Mesopotamia。
Mesopotamia was approximately 300 miles long and 150 miles wide, located between Euphrates and Tigris. The word Mesopotamia means “land between the rivers”, according to the Greeks. It is now known as Iran, consisting Babylon, Sumer, Persia, Assyria, each ranged a different period of time, and there are some overlaps of course. Sumer was the major part, starting from 5000BC, where the earliest evidence of human culture was found. Though going through different processes, they all ended around 250 BC the conquest by Alexander the great took place.
Eridu was probably the earliest and the most glorious city in the world, before the globally effected flood that is. Since it had a special geography, there were three types of ecosystems, agrarian, fisher-hunter and semi desert. Dry whether must be included, seldom rained. That’s why they made sun dried houses with small particles of mud and straw. Trees and plants are sometimes planted on the roofs to block away sunlight. People cared a lot about building Enki’s temples, or as they call “E-abzu or E-engura”, made for their multi-gods. One most common type of temple is called a ziggurat, shaped pyramid.
They were probably the most religious civilization before the Greeks, since each royal family had to contribute a virgin to the temple to be a priestess, or rather, temple prostitute, since all they seem to serve are priests. If they couldn’t let go and secretly shipped her away, that would be considered kidnapping and be put to death. Well, that would be something under the dining table to say out loud.
They were among the earliest civilizations to be recorded, and the starting point of western culture. The famous epic of Gilgamesh was written in Babylonia with a stylus, cut from reed leaves. Similarly to the Greeks, the gods they worshiped had lots of characteristics of man and act just like mortals. They get jealous, angry, upset, and revengeful. And they hold feasts, weddings, have children, and declare wars. Nothing out of the ordinary.
As said in the Epic of Gilgamesh, the gods could send down evil monsters to defeat human. They could be heartless to separate Gilgamesh from his friend Enkidu by death. I wouldn’t say the book was amazing or fabulous in any way, but interesting though. That we could peek through tiny holes and see a wide world out there.
