　　龙胜古称桑江，秦朝属黔中郡，西汉归武陵郡;晋至隋，属始安郡(郡治桂林);唐龙朔二年(公元662年)属灵川县地;晋天福八年(公元943年)属义宁县地，延至明代。清乾隆六年(公元1741年)设“龙胜理苗分府”(亦称龙胜厅)，直属桂林府。民国元年(公元1912年)“龙胜厅”改为“龙胜县”。中华人民共和国成立后,仍称“龙胜县”。1951年8月19日实行区域自治,改称“龙胜各族联合自治区(县级)”，1955年改为“龙胜各族联合自治县”,1956年改称“龙胜各族自治县”，是中南地区第一个成立的民族自治县

　　龙胜各族自治县位于广西东北部，人口17万人，面积2538平方公里，辖5镇5乡119个行政村，是一个典型“九山半水半分田”的山区县，是我国第一批成立的五个少数民族自治县之一。主体民族为：苗族、瑶族、侗族、壮族和汉族，自治民族为：苗族、瑶族、侗族，少数民族人口占总人口81%。

　　龙胜属于亚热带季风气候，全年气温平均为18.2°C，年平均无霜期324天，平均日照1412小时，地处南北暖湿与干冷气流的交锋地带，雨量充沛，年平均降雨量1556.6毫米。全境为山地，地形东北高、西南低，平均海拔约700米。山环水绕，生态环境好，有大小溪流480多条，瀑布多、落差大。

　　龙胜是红军长征经过的第一个少数民族聚居区，是党的民族政策首次提出并加以成功实践的地方，红色旅游资源十分丰富。自治区级重点文物保护单位“红军楼”、“红军桥”，题写有“继续斗争，再寻光明”、“红军绝对保护瑶民”等标语的红军岩，红军军委旧址、审敌堂、红军洞，红军烈士墓等等，是境内重要的红色旅游资源。配合着龙胜优美的自然风光和多姿多彩的民族文化，成为进行革命传统教育，联动开展山水风光游和民族文化游的胜地。

　　苗族：苗族自称为“厄”，也称“约当”;族源来自远古居住在长江中下游或黄河下游的“九黎”、“三苗”、“苗人”、“古三苗”之后裔。苗族人口23600人，主要分布于马堤乡、伟江乡一带。

　　瑶族：瑶族分盘瑶、花瑶、红瑶。盘瑶因崇拜“盘瓠”而得名;红瑶因妇女服饰以大红色为基调，各色花纹图案相配合而得名;花瑶因妇女服饰多为各色花纹图案相间而得名。盘瑶自称“入棉”，红瑶自称“尤轮”或“尤挪”;花瑶自称“家”。瑶族人口27865人，主要分布于和平乡、泗水乡、江底乡、平等乡、马堤乡和三门镇、龙胜镇一带。

　　壮族：壮族自称“布也”。壮族族称最早出现于宋代，民国时期官方文献称“撞人”，建国初期称为“僮族”，1956年把僮族的僮改为“壮族”。壮族人口32831人，主要分布在龙脊镇、泗水乡和瓢里镇、三门镇、龙胜镇一带。

　　农林特产

　　龙胜生态农业发展进程好，建成椪柑、南山梨为代表的优质水果基地，速生杉木林、笋竹两用林、“三木”药材、无公害蔬菜等生产基地，风鸡、翠鸭、黄牛、高山冷水鱼等畜禽水产养殖基地。土特产有柑桔、猕猴桃、罗汉果、油桐、茶油、茶叶香菇、木耳等，龙脊茶是我国28大名茶之一。药材的种类和产量很多，罗汉果年产量达到2亿多个，占全国的50%，被确定为“中国罗汉果地道药材产区”，厚朴、杜仲、黄柏产量占全国的30%。
